Hello beautiful, and welcome back to Mom’s Talk Sex Podcast with Mor Yelvington. I have the beautiful Angela Skurtu here with me today, and she is an absolute sexual powerhouse. Angela is a licensed marriage therapist, a certified sex therapist, and the host of the Open Bedroom Door Show.
Today, we are diving into a statistic that might shock you, but it explains exactly why so many long-term relationships lose their spark. We are breaking down why traditional talk therapy fails to fix intimacy, how to finally start the conversation, and some simple, actionable, fun bedroom ideas for couples to bring the excitement back.
Why Traditional Talk Therapy Fails to Fix Intimacy
Many couples turn to traditional therapy when things get stagnant, but they often find themselves stuck in the same old ruts. Angela is out to break the mold of talk therapy with her brand-new program launching in October 2026, called The Love Lab—a highly curated cohort limited to just seven couples.
According to Angela, the problem with traditional therapy is a lack of real-world action:
"It's all talk therapy. And most of us likely, we'll go to therapy and we'll talk for a while... but then outside of therapy, they struggle to really put it into action. So, the Love Lab is all action-focused. It's going to start with a couple's retreat that is a full immersive experience where I walk people through tantric sexual practices, couples massage, dance skills, and then that's like the igniter."
Life, stress, kids, and work are constantly vying for our attention, forcing pleasure onto the back burner. Action-based somatic experiences force partners to actively prioritize each other.
Actionable and Fun Bedroom Ideas for Couples to Respark the Spark
You do not need to plan an elaborate or expensive event to change the energy in your relationship. If you want to move past the routine of "maintenance sex," you can start with small, tactile, and sensory practices.
Here are three simple tips Angela recommends trying tonight to break out of a bedroom rut:
1. Own the Awkward and Communicate Positively
Since 73% of couples aren't talking about sex, bringing it up is going to feel weird at first. Own that awkwardness! Use positive, highly encouraging talk in the bedroom to direct your partner toward what you want more of. If they are an inch away from a spot that feels amazing, tell them with enthusiasm. It lowers their defenses, builds confidence, and makes feedback feel like a fun game rather than criticism.
2. Turn Intimacy Into a Sensory Playground
Remember that your entire body is capable of giving and receiving sexual pleasure, not just your genitals. Get sensory! Try a blindfolded foodie activity where you slowly feed each other fruits, meats, or chocolates. Or, engage your own senses simply for your own pleasure—whether that is running your fingers through your partner's hair or rubbing your face against their beard because it tickles and feels good.
3. Create an Inviting Sanctuary Space
Angela recommends watching How to Build a Sex Room on Netflix for inspiration on how to transform your bedroom into an inviting sanctuary. Whether you need warmer blankets, a wall of vibrators, or ambient lighting, your physical space should make you want to enter and enjoy it.
Find Your Own Brand of Sexy
At the end of the day, you don't need a massive wall of toys to have a fulfilling intimate life unless that is what you genuinely want. Angela openly shares that even as a sex therapist, she relies on one trusted favorite she calls "Old Faithful."
The goal is simply to find your unique brand of intimacy. Take chances, play games like Truth or Dare, laugh through the weird moments, and remember that nothing changes in your relationship if you don’t start the conversation.
